I believe one of the other reviewers, Kerry Neitz, said about all I have to say, so I will not be redundant here.

I believe the premise was great. I believe the beginning was great. I believe it ended well. The issue was the dreaded "sagging middle," which was hindered further by the real and dream world issues already mentioned in other reviews.

I know the author, and I know some of the history of this novel as far as how it got to print and the obstacles and hurdles it had to overcome to get to print. I believe that with a some editing time and a re-release, this book could be a great Spec-fiction book that could be up for some Spec-Fiction awards.

Sometimes, it's all about timing.

The Sending Matt Koceich 9781935929130 Books Reviews

I'm torn on how to write a review for The Sending. First off, I know Mr. Koceich, like him, and want his writing endeavors to succeed. I also know how criticism of your writing feels--it is like a dagger in the heart. It hurts!

On the other hand, I can't write an honest review without pointing out some of the places where this book stumbles. So I'll put my constructive criticism hat on, and hope this is taken in the spirit it is given.

First, the good stuff. The premise of The Sending is great. The idea of someone who has the ability to remote view and is looking for the literal Garden of Eden? Awesome. Also, I thought the characterizations of the book--especially those of the main characters--were quite sound. At times I thought the main character's (Mark's) wife was a tad less understanding than she should be, given the extraordinary circumstances. Otherwise, though, I thought the main characters were believable and filled their roles nicely.

Also, I liked the dual story aspect of The Sending. It gave the book the feel of Ted Dekker's Circle trilogy with a touch of William P. Young's The Shack. Seriously, there are bursts of greatness here, and some very thoughtful and poetic scenes.

That said, the book started to lose me at about the halfway point. It has lots of context switching between the "real" world and an alternative world and it takes a nimble reader to figure out where they are. Much of this could've been cleared up, I think, with more context information and description at the beginning of each section and reminders throughout. As it stands the reader is left to fumble along, trying to get their bearings again. In fact, characters and locations sometimes appear without any introduction.

The situation gets even worse when "real" Mark draws close to his goal. Since Mark exists in both the real and alternative world, the reader doesn't know which reality he is in at any one time. Perhaps Mark should've had an avatar (different name?) in the alternative world. Not sure...but it gets confusing.

Again, this book has the makings of something wonderful. I just think it needed more polishing and refining before it found a cover. The writing is sound, the premise is great, but the execution needs work.
The Sending is a first time novel by Matt Koceich a resident of Texas and a public school teacher.

The Sending had one of the best premises I'd been able to delve into in quite some time A man has the ability to see places in his mind. Seemingly cool, but harmless, right? Not quite. With a front of human financial backers the fallen angels want back into heaven and they want Mark to show them where the Garden of Eden is. But the viewing sessions are taking just longer than both of them thought. And for Mark, they're eating up time with his son Sam, and Mark's wife, Aubrey; who won't have finding the Garden destroy their family.

With this as a background, Mr. Koceich led us into a vision and `alternate reality' driven fiction book. I feel like there was plenty of material in the book. Plenty of information was shared and overall I don't think a lack of information caused a problem. However, I still felt in the dark for some of the time!! I believe that a different presentation of the information would have been useful. I found it easy to get lost in figuring out where the `real' Mark was until I finally decided it was co-vision and reality habitation, both running at once. That indeed helped some(If I was right). But I was already mostly done with the book by then!

A quality point worth pointing out in this book was the family relationship. I felt like their interactions were good and a real boon to the story line. Too often the family is just a base and then the story springs off. Here the story really revolved around Mark's family, and I think it worked beautifully.

The last thing I will mention was the vision-reality interaction. A large amount of time in the dream world I couldn't decide if what was going on was the real world being played out in this dream world. Or if the dream world was affecting the real world. OR if neither was affecting each other. Also, it seemed like sometimes he went unconscious to go there, and other times the chapters ran parallel confusing me more! Like I mentioned earlier, I believe all the information was there, at least mainly, but I think it needed a little reworking for reading ease.

In conclusion, it was a pretty solid first novel and I look forward to Mr. Koceich's next book and to see how he's matured.
